"Rare video of a ship going under the lift bridge, which I haven't been able to catch on camera much every time I visit here"

This was HUGE! Great Walleye Sandwhich for only $8.99. My suggestion is splitting this in 1/2, which is enough for 2 people...http://www.grandmasrestaurants.com/gmas_cp.htm*located in Canal Park (by Lift Bridge) in Duluth, Minnesotahttp://salphotobiz.smugmug.com/Travel/Minnesota/Duluth/23687106_kbcWNp#!i=2577536604&k=ZHW223hmore..http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/grandmas-saloon-and-grill-duluth?select=8Ur9jWTZZ_L3taqbC_WG7A#8Ur9jWTZZ_L3taqbC_WG7A

-Entering Duluth

One can see the changes of the landscape as they get closer to Duluth. After 2 1/2 to 2 3/4 hours of on the road (2 hour straight drive with no stops), we anticipated entering Duluth as we climbed up a hill and went down overseeing the city. The slope was so dramatic for me that I can feel the air pressure change in my ears. This is very similar to my past experience on a plane as it lands on the runway.

We went to the Dewitt-Seitz Marketplace, which was only a couple blocks from the "lift-bridge". Then we checked out this cool "native-american" theme store...

    -Drive Around the City
We drove up a steep hill going north from the harbor, which brought some vivid memories from the last time I was here as a kid.

Then we went further north to check out the Duluth International Airport

    -Visiting St. Scholastica Monastary

Sister "Maria" shares some history of this "Nativity Scene". This was actually carved from wood that was sent from Germany. The artist was from the nation of Hungary.

After swinging through the catholic school, we drove by the University of Minnesota-Duluth

    -Coming South from Two Harbors

We notice the extravagant new development north of downtown Duluth. My Bulgarian friends were just awe of the large "houses/mansions" along the shore. One in particular was the Glensheen Castle.

-Coming West from Superior-Douglas County, Wisconsin

    Road-Trip Experience

During our road-trip, I get excited on visiting the cities/towns along the way. The only stop on our way to Duluth from St. Paul was Pine City. Before heading back to St. Paul, we first stopped at Black Bear Casino in Carlton. The 2nd of two stops on the way back to St. Paul was Stacy, which we just went through for gas (almost got a full 10 gallong tank for the whole trip and back). At these stops I would post a Gospel-Tract on the bulletin boards by the restrooms, which was made the trip more of a evangelism-oriented trip.

    Jesus Movement History

A brother in the Lord from my local church shared with me about how he was involved in the "Jesus Movement" while attending school in Duluth. After going to Duluth, I wanted to "search" more about this...

"Traveling in an old bus and a few cars throughout the summer of 1971, they became one foci of media attention -- long-haired, hippy evangelists who had set out to "evangelize the United States." In late 1971 the group left the "home base" behind in Milwaukee and traveled south to Gainsville, Florida, where musical performances were made for the college crowd at the University of Florida at Gainsville. They found little positive response in Gainsville, and felt they were also being confused with another highly publicized group, the "Children of God." Discouraged by their lack of success, the group returned to Duluth, Minnesota in hopes of forming a permanent community. Shortly thereafter, they felt "burdened by the need of the city," and relocated in Chicago, Illinois- Religious Movements, from the Library of Virginia

"By February of 1972, JP Milwaukee had grown to nearly two hundred members. The teams returned to the Milwaukee base for a graduation service, and on April 23, 1972, with a year of leadership under his belt, Palosaari embarked on an outreach to Europe with the Sheep and around thirty of the older members. 11 J. W. Herrin took Resurrection Band along with thirty Jesus People, most of whom had been with him in Benton Harbor, Michigan, to minister as "Jesus People USA (JPUSA) Travelling Team." Frank Bass, a Duluth Christian from the traditional church, kept a small number for JP Milwaukee's "Home Base," which was supposed to serve as a coordinating center, while JPM left "Jesus People communes in Duluth and Davenport." 12 Meanwhile, the bulk of JP Milwaukee's number--many of them newer converts--became a part of Pentecostal tent revivalist Bill Lowrey's "Christ is the Answer.""-Jesus People USA

" What happened to the members of Jesus People Milwaukee who remained in the United States? Approximately ten members joined a commune in Duluth, Minnesota.(117) A second group of approximately thirty, led by John Herrin, headed southward to Florida. This group was Jesus People USA, and will be dealt with in greater detail below. Approximately fifty followed Bill Lowery, a travelling tent evangelist.(118) The remainder of the group was supposed to maintain the discipleship training school; however, this effort was short-lived:
That lasted less than a year. A man [Frank Bass], who had been affiliated with Youth for Christ up in Duluth became charismatic during the revival time we were up there, moved down and joined us. And he was left with the youngest and the weirdest group of people out of the Milwaukee [group], and it just didn't fly. . . I don't think he was experienced. I think it was a little bit of a shame that he was left in charge, because here's a guy who just moved out of a family with three kids, working for Youth for Christ, and all of a sudden thrown in a situation where he had to watch over thirty spiritually spooky, weirded [sic], unstable people.(119)"

  • Dayton declares Duluth flood state of emergency 9:18 PM, Jun 20, 2012 Written by KARE 11

  • "ST. PAUL, Minn. - Gov. Mark Dayton has declared a state of emergency and authorized the National Guard to help Duluth cope with its flood damage.
The governor issued the executive order Wednesday afternoon, a few hours after promising Duluth Mayor Don Ness that the state would provide all possible assistance.
Dayton plans to travel to Duluth on Thursday morning to discuss further how the state can help.
Dayton also asks people who live in or were planning to travel in the Duluth area to follow the requests of local authorities to stay off of affected roads and highways so emergency crews can do their work.
In Carlton, several residents have been evacuated. Some residents in Thomson Township in Carlton County were urged to leave after the Thompson Reservoir overflowed. Residents of Duluth's Fond du Lac neighborhood had also urged to evacuate.
The Red Cross has set up a shelter at First United Methodist Church in Duluth, also known as the "Copper Top Church."
Minnesota Power says its dams along the St. Louis River leading into Duluth and Superior, Wis., are holding well.
Utility spokeswoman Amy Rutledge tells the Duluth News Tribune there are no problems with any of the four dams along the lower river - including the Fond du Lac, Thomson, Scanlon and Knife Falls dams. She adds, "the system is designed to handle this kind of flood and more."
She says the stream flow at the Fond du Lac Dam has rocketed tenfold from the usual 2,000 to 5,000 cubic feet per second to 47,000.
The utility has opened dam gates to prevent floods upstream. That caused the river to rise rapidly in the Fond du Lac neighborhood, as it often has in the past, and inundate riverfront areas there.
The city of Superior, Wisconsin is also flooded.
University of Wisconsin-Superior spokeswoman Lynne Williams says they had to shut down campus Wednesday, because of power outages and flooded basements, some with several feet of water.
Much of Douglas and Bayfield counties received 3 to 5 inches of rain Tuesday and Wednesday, with some areas getting more than 6 inches.
There are no reports of anyone being displaced from homes, but more rain is expected Wednesday.
Superior Mayor Bruce Hagen says they haven't seen this much flooding since the early 1900s. He says a bridge has washed out, roads are blocked or washed out and homes are flooded. They hope to get the governor to declare a state of emergency.
